Employee Spotlight: Adrian Gongora, 20 Years with Cochran & Mann

Written by Cochran and Mann | October 9, 2024

Adrian Gongora’s journey is a testament to a positive attitude, adaptability and making your own opportunities. Growing up in Mexico and Spain, as the youngest of 8 siblings, Adrian’s early ambitions led him to pursue an education in economics. He earned a degree and later a master’s in macroeconomics.

After moving to the U.S., Adrian decided to trade the corporate world for a more hands-on career in the commercial painting industry—an unexpected shift that has now turned into a 20-year career at Cochran & Mann.

Meet Adrian of Cochran & Mann

What is your role at Cochran & Mann, and what are your main responsibilities?

"As a superintendent, my greatest responsibility is maintaining clear and effective communication between customers, suppliers, and employees. I ensure the right materials and tools are available for each project, serving as a bridge to provide quick, accurate information."

At Cochran & Mann, Superintendents play a pivotal role in the success of every project. They serve as the backbone of daily operations, ensuring that each job site runs smoothly and efficiently from start to finish.

With their expertise in project management, quality control, and on-site coordination, Cochran & Mann’s Superintendents oversee all phases of commercial painting and wall covering projects. They are essential in maintaining timelines, fostering strong team communication, and upholding the company’s high standards for safety and craftsmanship. Their leadership ensures that every project not only meets but exceeds client expectations.

How did you start your career in the commercial painting and wall-covering industry?

"It was a decision I made when I came to this country. I wanted a change—moving from office life to something more hands-on where I could meet new people. After the company I worked for went out of business, I was searching for options.

I found an ad for Cochran & Mann in the newspaper, but they didn’t have anything available at the time. Determined, I drove to the office, met Will Cochran, and presented my résumé. The next day, I started working—on Christmas Eve."

Memorable Projects and Challenges

Have you worked on any unique or challenging projects during your time at Cochran & Mann?

"I think every project is unique in its own way. Some, of course, present more challenges than others, but each one is rewarding no matter the size. One project that stands out to me is the Village at Shirlington—it’s one I’ll always remember."

How would you describe the company culture at Cochran & Mann?

This culture of trust, respect, and craftsmanship mirrors the high standards of service Cochran & Mann delivers every day. It’s a team environment where values like hard work, integrity, and attention to detail drive success, ensuring that every project meets the exceptional quality the company is known for.

What do you enjoy most about working with your team?

"The trust and freedom we have in our work. There’s confidence here, and I feel that I’m truly part of something special."

Outside the Job

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

"I love painting, especially with oils, and I enjoy experimenting with other techniques. I also practice kayaking with my family and recently got back into playing the bagpipes."

Do you have a favorite restaurant?

"Not one in particular, but we have a tradition of picking a new restaurant every weekend. We love trying all kinds of foods, no matter how different or bizarre they might be."

Advice and Reflection

What advice would you give someone considering a career in commercial painting?

"Give yourself the opportunity to see what it truly means to be a painter. It’s not just about painting a room—it’s learning the techniques and different types of painting. And come check out Cochran & Mann. It’s a great place with an incredible atmosphere."

What has kept you here for 20 years?

"Time speaks for itself. These 20 years are proof that this is a company worth working for. It’s been a great journey, and I’m excited to continue being a part of Cochran & Mann."
