PPG Introduces Anti-Viral and Anti-Bacterial Copper Armor Paint

April 13, 2022

PPG Copper Armor

PPG, a long-standing partner of Cochran & Mann, recently announced their newest virus- and bacteria-fighting paint: Copper Armor. This innovative interior coating utilizes Corning® Guardiant® copper technology to kill 99.9% of viruses and bacteria within two hours of exposure.

In October 2021, Copper Armor received national EPA registration and continues to receive registration at the state level. The coating underwent rigorous testing protocols to make its positive public health claims. Copper Armor is proven to kill germs and microorganisms to protect against disease-causing agents such as Staph, MRSA, E. coli, and SARS-CoV-2.

Corning’s Anti-Microbial Key Ingredient

PPG’s partnership with Corning, a leading innovator in materials science, allows them to utilize a key ingredient that makes the new interior coating so capable of protecting the public’s health. Copper Armor utilizes Corning Guardiant copper ion technology, an additive tested at the University of Arizona’s microbiology lab led by Dr. Charles Gerba. Guardiant is proven to continuously kill germs and sanitize walls. The recent EPA registration marks the first product available in the U.S. that utilizes Guardiant.

Benefits of Copper Armor Paint

PPG Copper Armor Paint kills microbial activity within a two-hour timespan. The coating is also effective at killing resistant strains which are the leading causes of hospital-acquired infections. Copper Armor Paint is an excellent supplement to disinfecting procedures and, in fact, sanitizes the surface for up to five years after application.

Throughout recent years, there has been an increased skepticism over resistant strains. Many new products have been slow to reach markets over the global concern that they will contribute to strains developing resistance to anti-viral and anti-bacterial efforts. However, copper is an element that has been present around the world for thousands of years. It is used in building, kitchen materials, clothing, and much more. It has not shown any signs of contributing to resistant strains. Copper ions prevent cell respiration, disrupt the cell membrane, and destroy the DNA and RNA within. This means the microbe isn't likely to mutate or develop a resistance to copper.

Beyond the health benefits, Copper Armor poses a variety of other benefits. It is resistant to mold and mildew, and it provides a premium level of durability and hide. Not to mention it emits a low odor and zero VOC†. Copper Armor is available in the pastel base and is tintable to more than 600 colors. Whether you’re a professional or DIYer, it is easy to apply to any interior surface.
